Some SaaS I use went down, and after the past few weeks my first instinct was to check AWS for an outage. Turns out it wasn’t their fault this time.

The AWS outage started with competing writes to a single DNS entry. It cascaded into DynamoDB failures, which took down EC2, which broke everything dependent on those services. Your "independent" microservices share more infrastructure than you think.
