About Rogers outages
Rogers is one of Canada’s three national carriers, and its outages come in two very different shapes. Wireless problems (calls, SMS, mobile data) can affect customers coast to coast at once, because the mobile network is national — and because Fido and Chatr run on the same network, their users typically report problems at the same time. Home-internet and TV problems are usually regional instead: the cable footprint is concentrated in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, and since the Shaw acquisition closed in 2023, Western Canada as well. A spike of reports from a single province usually points to a local network issue rather than a national event.
Notable incidents
The defining event is the July 8, 2022 nationwide outage — one of the largest in Canadian history. A maintenance update to the core network caused Rogers routers to fail, taking down wireless, home internet, and TV together for roughly a full day. Because Interac’s debit network relied on Rogers connectivity, card payments failed across the country, and some users couldn’t reach 911. The outage triggered a CRTC inquiry and industry-wide agreements on emergency roaming between carriers.
Before that, the April 19, 2021 wireless outage knocked out voice, SMS, and data for Rogers, Fido, and Chatr customers nationally for most of a day; Rogers attributed it to a software update from its network equipment vendor.
How Rogers outages typically look
- Everything down at once, nationwide — rare, but it’s the core-network failure mode seen in 2022; expect Fido and Chatr reports to spike in lockstep.
- Mobile data or calling issues — more common, often regional, and sometimes limited to one of voice/SMS/data while the others work.
- Ignite internet/TV down in one region — typically a local infrastructure or maintenance issue; check whether reports on the map cluster in your province.
